International Trade Law
This course covers the different layers of the system of international trade regulation, from multilateral, regional and bilateral trade agreements to national laws and mechanisms. The primary focus will be on the WTO system and its substantive rules, their development and their enforcement. The course will also touch on selected aspects of national foreign trade law in their international context such as customs law, export controls, sanctions and anti-terrorism measures affecting international trade. Both parts will put a special emphasis on recent and current developments, including ongoing negotiations at the WTO (Doha Development Agenda) and between the EU and its trading partners (e.g., EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreements).
Students will develop their understanding of the mechanics of the international trading system, in particular the WTO, including the roles played by governments, businesses and institutions, and the main aspects of national and EU regulation of foreign trade. This will enable them as future managers to work the system, to identify violations and work towards appropriate remedies, to avoid exposure (export controls, sanctions etc.) and to build key aspects and trends of international trade regulation into their strategic thinking.
